ENADA® NADH

This coenzyme, ENADA® NADH, is a proven energy enhancer and powerful antioxidant.

Many Americans suffer from lack of energy on a day-to-day basis. This leaves them lethargic and unfocused. Meanwhile, cellular research has proposed that the proportional relationship between enzyme and coenzyme tells us that a lack of either one will slow down the cell's energy conversion process: one does not work without the other.

In order for the cells in our bodies to use energy from the foods we eat, existing enzymes and coenzymes must combine to catalyze the conversion of glucose (digested food) into mechanical energy.

NADH, is biologically known as Coenzyme 1, reduced ß-nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide with high-energy hydrogen which provides energy to the cells. This coenzyme was discovered in 1905 in yeast. In 1997, an FDA-approved double-blind placebo-controlled crossover clinical study at Georgetown University Medical Center found that patients taking 10 mg of NADH daily for four weeks are four times more likely than those taking a placebo to experience a reduction in the symptoms of chronic fatigue syrdrome (CFS). In a follow-up open-label study, 73% of the patients achieved marked improvement over time.

According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC), those who suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome have prolonged, debilitating fatigue which can last for months or years. Symptoms include lethargy, weakness and concentration difficulties. Causes of CFS are unknown, but some physiological signs include brain inflammation, immune system abnormalities, hormonal deficits and viral infections. It is estimated that more than 6% of the U.S. population suffers from CFS - one in every 16 people in the country.

Chronic fatigue syndrome usually starts after a bout with mononucleosis, a viral infection, or a very stressful experience. CFS also may be caused by a deficiency of the cellular energy-storing molecule ATP (adenosine triphosphate). Symptoms can lead to severe fatigue, muscle weakness and muscle pain. Rest and sleep have no effect on extreme tiredness.

Joseph A. Bellanti, M.D., director of Georgetown's International Immunology Center and the study's co- principal investigator, states, "We believe that patients with chronic fatigue syndrome have lower levels of ATP, the chemical that gives the body energy."

Currently, 60% of reported cases involve women and patients who usually fall between the ages of 20 and 40. The number of cases for school-age children and young adults is on the rise. If this trend continues to increase, the reported cases of chronic fatigue syndrome could approach near-epidemic levels by the year 2000.

The Georgetown medical study demonstrated the metabolic theory that a surplus of NADH should increase the amount of energy to the body. An increase of NADH would directly increase the amount of energy each cell could potentially use.

NADH is present in every living organism, whether it be animal or plant. We receive NADH through our daily foods. Professor Georg Birkmayer, M.D.,Ph.D, a world-renowned biochemical researcher, has been at the forefront of NADH research. He was the first to identify the importance of NADH in cellular development and energy transmission. He says that the richest sources of NADH are meat, fish and poultry. Vegetarians, because fruits and vegetables contain lower NADH content, should be careful of possible NADH deficiencies. For example, in the booklet published by Keats Publishing, NADH: The Energizing Coenzyme, Birkmayer says that in terms of NADH content within mg/kg of tissue, poultry contains 40 mg, while corn produces only 0.1 mg.

Birkmayer also led the campaign to obtain a patent for an NADH oral dosage form nutritional supplement called ENADA® (his company also holds patents for all sublingual, nasal spray, dermal and rectal applications and, in January, was issued a usage patent for the administration of NADH in connection with chronic fatigue syndrome).

NADH is a very fragile molecule which breaks down when reaching the stomach. The patented form is enteric-coated to protect the tablet from stomach acids and is the only stabilized, ingestible, absorbable version of the substance. These are some of the reported effects when taking NADH in this oral form:

  • Repairs DNA molecules
  • Protects the liver from alcohol damage
  • Protects against alcohol-induced inhibition of testosterone biosynthesis
  • Lowers blood cholesterol levels and overall blood pressure
  • Acts as a memory enhancer
  • Acts as an athletic performance and energy enhancer
  • Is used to treat Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease

Most of these effects stem from NADH's involvement within the cellular immune system. The body's autoimmune system needs antioxidants In order to reduce free radicals (reactive molecules) and keep them from damaging cell walls, and NADH has been shown to have the highest reduction value of any biological material. Therefore, it has an enormous antioxidative capacity and is one of the most potent free radical scavengers.

Birkmayer said in an interview with Richard Passwater,Ph.D., in WHOLE Foods Magazine, April 1997, "Yes, healthy people can certainly benefit from oral NADH supplementation as it can provide additional energy for people of all ages. Healthy people taking oral NADH report feeling better, stronger and smarter. I have been taking NADH for three years now. I don't need any coffee, I can work harder, can focus much better and can recall names and phone numbers quickly. I just feel better...."

Studies show that NADH is safe and naturally occurring. The proven benefits of NADH, as an antioxidant and as an energy enhancer, conclusively suggest that the more NADH in our body the better our overall health and well-being.
